9/1/2018 0 Comments Death in the FamilyIt is difficult enough to grieve. Imagine the difficulty of giving a loved one the most memorable goodbye all while you are grieving and has yet to accept the loss. Yes, this is how many families feel about funeral. It is both an emotional tragedy and a practical challenge. And thankfully, there are funeral services that can help in these difficult and trying times. Death and Decisions I had very little idea of how funerals are arranged. In many instances when there was a death in the family, I was still a child and was never really involved in making such arrangements. That was until my sister-in-law passed away early this year. Me and my brother were both working in Singapore and needless to say we were already adults and was practically the only family there. So I was heavily involved in arranging the funeral. As I found, organizing a funeral was not a simple task of ‘leaving it’ to the insurance company or funeral home. In fact, I was very much involved every step of the way. In some cases it starts from the moment of the accident. First, there is a need to report the death and arrange transportation of the deceased to the funeral home which is twice more difficult if there is a need for multiple transportation if the wake, ceremony or burial has to be done in another location or facility outside a funeral home or if the site of the accident and the morgue is miles apart.
In our case though, it was a little less complicated. We just had to decide on details: embalming, choosing a casket, a funeral vault, finding a location for the wake, choosing between burial and cremation and even finding a cemetery. But even these were not easy tasks. Even the choice of clothing was a hard decision to make. Religions and Rituals But if the choice of clothing and embalming were not hard enough, there was the issue of ceremony. Will the ceremony involve clergy, pallbearers, speakers? Will it include music, readings, or tributes? Who and how many will give a eulogy? We were a Catholic family. And thankfully enough, although this was not the dominant religion in Singapore, there were no lack of Catholic funeral service in Singapore. Since in our religion, the choice of ministers and venues are very important considerations, . In Singapore, funeral directors found us a Catholic priest to lead the ceremony. This was important for us since under our belief, if the departed is member of a church and regular church goer, which my sister-in-law was, we preferred a pastor or minister of our church to officiate the service. In our religion too, funeral is a tragic yet positive opportunity for the family to collectively strengthen our faith. As such, the Singapore Catholic funeral we arranged involved vigils, liturgy rites of committal, gospel readings and symbolic offering of faith to God and hope for of salvation for the loved one who passed away in order to continue the bond between the departed and those left behind.
